After realising that Reagan cries in the night and is quiet once we go to her we decided we need to break this cycle as we know there is nothing wrong with her! Last night we decided to let her cry for 15 minutes and then comfort her for a minute and leave her again.
She woke at 4am and we let her cry for 15 minutes which was tough for all three of us but mom went in after 15 and even before she got in the room Reagan was quiet, mom gave her reassurance, some water put her dummy back in and put Geraldine in her arms told her she loved her and left her again. Immediately she turned for the door the cries began again and it was torture for us again as we lay there listening to our daughter bawl and scream until it was my turn and I did the same thing as mom did 15 minutes earlier.
This cycle went on for an hour but at 7 minutes past 5 as we discussed whether to pick her up the next time we go in she fell silent and didn’t wake again until 8am
Cruel to be kind maybe a way to describe it and it was the longest hour and 7 minutes ever but compared to the last few nights when either mom or dad have sat with her for up to 3hours at a time believing there was a reason why she was not sleeping. We are confident this is the right thing for all of us and she will learn that mom and dad don’t appear everytime she cries….although most of the time we can’t help it because she just doesn’t cry that often so it usually means she needs something.
We hope tonight is easier, watch this space!
